What is Issue 6 all about? Union Terminal!
Union Terminal, Cincinnati Museum Center’s home and our National Historic Landmark, will be on the November 3, 2009 ballot. Hamilton County voters are being asked to pass Issue 6, a renewal levy with a reduction. At the reduced level, the renewal will generate approximately $16.2 million over five years for the occupancy costs and maintenance of Union Terminal, a building owned by Cincinnati and Hamilton County taxpayers.
Museum Center understands the challenges of the current economy and is confident voters will appreciate that the Union Terminal levy provides life support to this Cincinnati icon, but actually represents a tax decrease. By supporting the smallest countywide levy, voters have the opportunity to make a crucial impact on our public treasure.
Cincinnati Museum Center has worked hard to create a vibrant, healthy, top-notch visitor experience in one of our city’s and our nation’s greatest and most historic buildings – Union Terminal. Museum Center has made huge progress in this regard. It is currently the largest drawing arts and culture operation in the area and brings in $15 million annually in new money from outside the region. Earlier this year, Forbes Traveler recognized Cincinnati Museum Center as the 17th most visited museum in the country – ahead of the Art Institute of Chicago and the only location in Ohio to make the list.
The success of Cincinnati Museum Center is due in no small part to its home. Union Terminal has touched all of our lives in some way and is truly a part of our shared history. A wife reunited with her husband coming home from war, a marriage proposal inside the rotunda, a child’s love of science inspired by Dinosaurs Alive. These stories and countless others all share the common thread of Union Terminal.
When you go to the polls this November, please vote yes for Union Terminal’s Issue 6.
